The first project undertaken by Magma Art Space is a duo exhibition & open studio by Ástriður J. Ólafsdóttir and Clizia Macchi, taking place from the 13th of May until the 15th of June in the ex Þula Galleri located in Hjartatorg, 101 Reykjavik, Iceland.
Although of different nationalities, Ástriður and Clizia grew up in Italy, in small towns of two border regions, Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, surrounded by hilly landscapes and immersed in a rich cultural heritage as well as having their roots in families where art is a profession.
Despite the initial similarities, the two women’s painting style is quite different, so much so that one cannot help but think of the reason behind a joint exhibition, and if their artworks would succeed in supporting one another visually and conceptually.
There was indeed some tension about the overall look of the artwork display, with a lot of “what if it doesn’t work?” moments. However, their mind was set and they were determined to make it work.
As soon as the walls started to be populated by their canvases, a sense of consistency quickly developed and established: chromatic, of course, but also a deeper meaning, almost like a feeling of closure.
Clizia’s erratic, otherworldly spirits suddenly found a home in Ástriður´s planets and uninhabited land-escapes. Planets and stars seemed to be at ease next to one another, even though interpreted by each artist from a different angle and independently.
In real life, “Where is home” has been a recurring topic in their conversation: Ástriður as an Icelandic national who grew up in Italy, and Clizia as an expat missing from her homeland for more than 10 years, they have gotten to the point where it becomes difficult take a decision, draw a line and actually feel that sense of belonging. Lines become blurred, borders are not so obvious anymore.
However, the discussion on immigrant artists and the general sense of displacement that might affect their work is for the experts in these subjects. For now, we are happy to see the exhibition coming to life: we look forward to feel how it will be perceived by the public and what kind of debate it will sparkle.
We hope to see you on Saturday 13th at 14:00 for the opening event, where the artists will be present.
